CURRENTS: HORROR AMOUR
Curated by Georgia Henkel
March 20 - May 10, Loudoun House
Opening March 20th 6-9pm
Throughout history, cultures have demonstrated aesthetic preferences on how their personal space is occupied. Imagine the suffocating space of the Book of Kells, the cluttered interiors of the Victorians, even the busyness of Where’s Waldo books. Horror Vacui refers to extreme cases of dense imagery. It is a term coined by the Italian art critic, Mario Praz and literally means Fear of emptiness. Amor Vacui, its antithesis refers to a Love of emptiness.
Artists were handed the challenge of constructing their own visual propensity based on these two extremes while trying to stay out of the middle.
Currents artists include: Mike Goodlett, Mike McKay, Myke Dronez, LA Watson, Liz Swanson, Ellen Molle, Ed Franklin, Colin Doherty, Leah Crews Castleman, Lawrence Tarpey, SmithTownsendCollaborative, Lauren Argo

The Drawing Room presented by Expanded Draught - Drawing Rooms was first presented in March 2007, Galway City. Cyril Briscoe (expanded draught artist), a well known DJ of the SISI duo (110th street), started the day. Cyril focused on the creation of a soundscape of sorts using clock radios, samples, records as well as live inputs and the result was drawing with sound. After the event Cyril made a piece inspired by the drawing rooms, which is provided alongside this information pack. Cyril set was followed by 7 more Galway based Dj’s who generously donated their time and entertained the viewers and participants throughout the day.
Through this project, Expanded Draught transformed an empty white space into one almost entirely covered in drawing, collage and color. An added bonus was the unexpected sense of community excitement of the day. Two more Drawing Rooms took place in the coming years, one in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA and one During TULCA Festival of Visual Art in 2008.
Sculptural Installation Spaces presented by Melissa Vandenberg - inspired by works created for Vandenberg’s 2014 LAL exhibition, VICTORY WITHOUT FANFARE, Art Gala features a dedicated space for guests to experiment with sculptural installations. Guests are be able to create their own installation using soft sculptural forms that will be placed throughout the room. Vandenberg created a series of magical environments made out of paper that guests can explore throughout the evening.
Video Installations from the Collection of Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, 21c Museum Hotel - “Victorian Play” by Robert Pettena, “Promenade” by Robin Rohde, “Return” by Miguel Angel Rios.
