Le Roman de Silence, a 13th-century romance, has been brought to life by Boris Zakić and his artistic team of scribes and illuminators as they chronicle the story of Silence; a revolutionary hero(ine), navigating her identity while disguised as a boy. With themes of gender formulation and social constructs of identity, this engaging exhibition offers a contemporary reflection on timeless issues. It showcases large hand-painted panels in the original Picard French calligraphy, with scenes, patterns and fanciful decoration embellished in blue and gold. Lines have been carefully selected to narrow down this epic so the viewer can experience the poem, and its full emotional content, in a gallery setting. The images and texts are on cradled panels, measuring 48 x 48 inches per page. As the only surviving copy of Le Roman de Silence is currently housed in the archives at the Wollaton Hall in Nottingham England, this exhibition serves up a delightful experience of medieval manuscript illumination in a contemporary context. This original treatment preserves both the original narrative and the visual methodology in the so-called flamboyant gothic style while borrowing elements and illumination passages by Willem Vrelant, Limbourg brothers, and others.

Boris Zakić is a Professor of Art at Georgetown College since 2000, served on the LAL Board of Directors from 2010-2014, and is a current recipient of the Al Smith Fellowship, KAC 2023-24. Scan the QR code below with your mobile device to read more about Silence.
