Exhibitions are scheduled on a six to eight week rotation. Group and solo exhibitions are possible. All media will be considered, including installation and new media work. Work may be paired with that of one or more artists in a group exhibition. The proposing artist and/or curator in consultation with the Exhibitions and Programs Director of the LAL will determine the final number of objects.
To submit a proposal:
- Please send a letter addressing the proposed exhibition, which describes:
- The concept, format, or theme of the proposed exhibition (please include which gallery space you are applying for)
- Information about why the work was selected for the exhibition
- Artist/Curator’s capacity to execute the exhibition
- Any special requirements and/or costs associated with the proposed exhibition, if applicable
- Any supplementary public programs or presentations, if applicable
- Up to 20 digital images
- A resume of relevant experience
CD and DVD submissions preferred.
Special note for Curator:
Curators should expect to be the primary coordinator for the accepted exhibition. Standard curatorial responsibilities include: handling all arrangements with artists; overseeing the timely installation of the exhibition; executing any agreed upon public programs or presentations during the exhibition run, and providing necessary information to the staff for development of promotional materials.
Eligibility:
Proposals from artists or curators from Kentucky are encouraged. Application materials will not be returned.
Rolling application deadline
Gallery Missions and Spec.’s
LAL @ the Loudoun House: The mission is to challenge and stimulate the public through presentation of excellence in art. Exhibits will include artists from across the country (and beyond) that represent the best of the theme or genre intended by the exhibit.
The Loudoun House is an 1850’s Gothic Revival Mansion located in Castlewood Park in Lexington, KY. There are four primary galleries, and two hallways, each made of concrete walls overlaid with plaster; all ceilings are 12’.
- Lilian Boyer Gallery (6’ high hanging space, 580 square feet, 62 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
- Miriam Woolfolk Gallery (7’ high hanging space, 270 square feet, 31 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
- Zygmunt Gierlech Gallery (6’ high hanging space, 320 square feet, 63 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
- Neil Sulier Gallery (8’ high hanging space, 360 square feet, 47 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
- First Floor Hallway (7’ high hanging space, 312 square feet, 51 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
- Second Floor Hallway (8’ high hanging space, 352 square feet, 57 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
LAL Project Space: The mission is to exhibit installation and new media work that is engaging, challenging, and experimental in both concept and execution.
The Project Space, located in the basement of the historic Loudoun House, is 29’x20’ with concrete and brick walls that are painted white, and a concrete floor painted gray. There is one doorway (45”x81”). The ceiling has exposed pipes and ductwork; the ductwork is 74” from the floor, the lights are 84” from the floor. The lights are fluorescent, but alternative lighting may be used (with the fluorescents turned off). There are several electrical outlets spaced around the room. The basement also houses artist studios, a classroom, and storage spaces.
LAL @ the Mayor’s Office (Visual Dialogue): The goal is to introduce visual art to the rhythm of the governmental process and to engage our community leaders, on a daily basis, in the notion that visual art can play a powerful role in presenting new ways of thinking.
Because of the sensitive nature of this space, please avoid submitting any work that could be construed as controversial, political, or offensive.
Located in the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Center on Main Street this space also regularly participates in the Downtown Gallery Hop.

Nude 2010
January 16—March 28, 2010
Entry Deadline: October 31, 2009
|
The human figure in art is timeless and universal and has reverberated throughout art history and contemporary art practice. Contemporary artists have refocused our gaze on personal identity as a viable and engaging conduit for explorations of modern life, modern identity, and the social and sexual politics that impact us all. With that stated, artists are invited to submit images of their work, in any medium, along with an artist statement for consideration by the selection committee for the twenty-fourth annual Nude, presented by the Lexington Art League (LAL). While all work will be considered, special consideration will be paid to conceptual and new media art.
About the Selection Committee:
Esther E. Randall is an Associate Professor and Gallery Director in the Department of Art and Design at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. Earning her MFA in sculpture from Indiana University in 1978 and her BFA from the University of Georgia in 1972, she is the recipient of an Al Smith Fellowship in 1998 and two Kentucky Foundation For Women Grants in 1992 and 2007. Her work, based upon the figure, encompasses a wide variety of media and approaches, and has been exhibited widely regionally and nationally.
Boris Zakic received an MFA at University of New Orleans in 2000 and the “Neue Dimensions in Wissenschaft” Award by Raum und Zeit and Goethe-Insitut Belgrade for the Translation Paintings in 2004. He has held teaching appointments at Georgetown College, University of New Orleans and KIIS programs in Athens and Rome. His work is characteristically recognized by trompe l’oeil renderings of thickly impastoed paint within resurgo-romantic themes, including the presentation of subverted, removed or altogether absent subjects.
