›Call for Exhibition Proposals: LAL galleries

LAL welcomes proposals for its three galleries: LAL @ Loudoun House, LAL Project Space, and LAL @ the Mayor’s Office.  Both artists and curators are encouraged to submit proposals.  Exhibitions are scheduled on a six to eight week rotation. Group and solo exhibitions are possible.  All media will be considered, including installation and new media work.  Work may be paired with that of one or more artists in a group exhibition.  The proposing artist and/or curator in consultation with the Exhibitions and Programs Director of the LAL will determine the final number of objects.

To submit a proposal:

  1. Please send a letter addressing the proposed exhibition, which describes:
    • The concept, format, or theme of the proposed exhibition (please include which gallery space you are applying for)
    • Information about why the work was selected for the exhibition
    • Artist/Curator’s capacity to execute the exhibition
    • Any special requirements and/or costs associated with the proposed exhibition, if applicable
    • Any supplementary public programs or presentations, if applicable
  2. Up to 20 digital images
  3. A resume of relevant experience

CD and DVD submissions preferred.

Special note for Curator:
Curators should expect to be the primary coordinator for the accepted exhibition. Standard curatorial responsibilities include: handling all arrangements with artists; overseeing the timely installation of the exhibition; executing any agreed upon public programs or presentations during the exhibition run, and providing necessary information to the staff for development of promotional materials.

Eligibility:
Proposals from artists or curators from Kentucky are encouraged.  Application materials will not be returned.

Rolling application deadline

LAL @ the Loudoun House: The mission is to challenge and stimulate the public through presentation of excellence in art. Exhibits will include artists from across the country (and beyond) that represent the best of the theme or genre intended by the exhibit.

The Loudoun House is an 1850’s Gothic Revival Mansion located in Castlewood Park in Lexington, KY. There are four primary galleries, and two hallways, each made of concrete walls overlaid with plaster; all ceilings are 12’.

  1. Lilian Boyer Gallery (6’ high hanging space, 580 square feet, 62 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  2. Miriam Woolfolk Gallery (7’ high hanging space, 270 square feet, 31 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  3. Zygmunt Gierlech Gallery (6’ high hanging space, 320 square feet, 63 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  4. Neil Sulier Gallery (8’ high hanging space, 360 square feet, 47 linear feet of exhibition wall space)

  6. Second Floor Hallway (8’ high hanging space, 352 square feet, 57 linear feet of exhibition wall space)

311’ Linear Wall Space

LAL Project Space: The mission is to exhibit installation and new media work that is engaging, challenging, and experimental in both concept and execution.

The Project Space, located in the basement of the historic Loudoun House, is 29’x20’ with concrete and brick walls that are painted white, and a concrete floor painted gray.  There is one doorway (45”x81”). The ceiling has exposed pipes and ductwork; the ductwork is 74” from the floor, the lights are 84” from the floor.  The lights are fluorescent, but alternative lighting may be used (with the fluorescents turned off).  There are several electrical outlets spaced around the room. The basement also houses artist studios, a classroom, and storage spaces.

LAL @ the Mayor’s Office (Visual Dialogue): The goal is to introduce visual art to the rhythm of the governmental process and to engage our community leaders, on a daily basis, in the notion that visual art can play a powerful role in presenting new ways of thinking.

Because of the sensitive nature of this space, please avoid submitting any work that could be construed as controversial, political, or offensive.

Located in the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Center on Main Street this space also regularly participates in the Downtown Gallery Hop.

Darkroom Showcase

August 27, 2010
Entry Deadline: July 16, 2010

Creatures Great and Small: Since human beings have been creating images and objects, animals- both real and fantastic- have endured as compelling subject matter.  A huge number of artists today are using animal imagery to talk about difficult issues such as intimacy, loss, and vulnerability.  In many ways animals are effective stand-ins for ourselves, because they allow artists to discuss challenging concepts with a power and intensity unattainable through the human form.  As a whole this exhibition effectively inspires questions regarding life and death, morality, and meaning with humor, whimsy, sensitivity, and insight.  Artists are encouraged to creatively interpret the theme.  2-D, 3-D, performance, and time-based entries will be considered.  The mission of the Darkroom Showcase is to exhibit installation, performance, and new media work that is engaging, challenging, and experimental in both concept and execution.  The installation and/or performance will take place the evening of Fourth Friday which lasts from 6-9 PM.  The artist will be entirely responsible for the installation and removal of their artwork, as well as solely bearing the financial responsibility of any and all supplies and travel expenses. We encourage KY artists and those from surrounding states to apply.

To Apply
To apply for the Darkroom Showcase, please send a cover letter addressing the content of your work and the installation that you propose for the space, a work sample that can include up to 10 digital images, along with an inventory list of the images, and a resume listing other gallery exhibitions (if applicable). If the work that you would like to exhibit in the Darkroom Showcase is currently unrealized, include a detailed, written proposal, with scripts, drawings, or other images if possible. Application materials are due by July 16, 2010 and will not be returned. Notifications will be mailed by August 3 2010.
