The Lexington Art League (LAL) seeks proposals for Visual Dialogue, an exhibition in partnership with the Mayor’s and Council Members’ Offices of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG).  The mission of Visual Dialogue is to have visual art as part of the regular experience for those who visit the Mayor’s and Council Members’ offices and the Government Center; to encourage dialogue about creativity in our community among the elected officials, community leadership, staff and visitors to the Government Center; and to provide inspiration for new ways of seeing.  The Mayor’s Office is located on the 12th floor and the Council Members’ Office is located on the 5th floor of the Government Center building at 200 E. Main Street in downtown LexingtonThe Mayor’s and Council Members’ Offices combined can accommodate approximately 50-60 two-dimensional works.  Exhibitions will run for approximately nine weeks.  Both group and solo exhibitions are possible.

To apply for Visual Dialogue: please send a cover letter addressing the content of the work and the reasons and preferred date(s) that you wish to exhibit with the LAL at the LFUCG; up to 20 digital images; an artist or exhibition statement; and a resume.  Application materials will not be returned.

Eligibility: Any artist 18 years or older living in Kentucky.  Please note, due to spatial limitations of the Mayor’s Office and Council Members’ Offices, we will only be able to accommodate two-dimensional work.

›Call for Exhibition Proposals: Lexington Art League at the Loudoun House

The Lexington Art League (LAL) seeks proposals for its flagship gallery at the historic Loudoun House for its 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 exhibition calendars.  Both artists and independent curators are encouraged to submit proposals.  Exhibitions are scheduled on a six to eight week rotation. Group and solo exhibitions are possible.  All media will be considered, including installation and multimedia work.  Work may be paired with that of one or more artists in a small group exhibition.  The proposing artist and/or curator in consultation with the Visual Art Director of the LAL will determine the final number of objects. 

Space Considerations: 
The Loudoun House is an 1850’s Gothic Revival Mansion located in Castlewood Park in Lexington, KY. There are four primary galleries, and two hallways, each made of concrete walls overlaid with plaster; all ceilings are 12’.

  1. Lilian Boyer Gallery (6’ high hanging space, 580 square feet, 62 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  2. Miriam Woolfolk Gallery (7’ high hanging space, 270 square feet, 31 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  3. Zygmunt Gierlech Gallery (6’ high hanging space, 320 square feet, 63 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  4. Neil Sulier Gallery (8’ high hanging space, 360 square feet, 47 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  5. First Floor Hallway (7’ high hanging space, 312 square feet, 51 linear feet of exhibition wall space)
  6. Second Floor Hallway (8’ high hanging space, 352 square feet, 57 linear feet of exhibition wall space)

To submit a proposal:

  1. Please send a letter addressing the proposed exhibition, which describes:
    • The concept, format, or theme of the proposed exhibition
    • Information about why you have selected each artist for the exhibition
    • Artist/Curator’s capacity to execute the exhibition
    • Any special requirements and/or costs associated with the proposed exhibition
    • Any supplementary public programs or presentations
  2. Up to 20 digital images
  3. An exhibition statement
  4. A resume of relevant experience 

Special note for Independent Curator:
Independent curators should expect to be the primary coordinator for the accepted exhibition. Standard curatorial responsibilities include: handling all arrangements with artists; overseeing the timely installation of the exhibition; executing any agreed upon public programs or presentations during the exhibition run, and providing necessary information to the staff for development of promotional materials.

Return of Application Materials:
CD’s will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.  Exhibitions that are accepted for the Loudoun House will not have their CD’s returned until the close of the exhibition.  Rolling deadline for materials to be received.

›Call to Artists: the Project Space

The Lexington Art League (LAL) invites artists to apply for an exhibition in the Project Space for its 2008-2009 calendar year.  The mission of the Project Space is to exhibit installation and new media work that is engaging, challenging, and experimental in both concept and execution.  The Project Space, located in the basement of the historic Loudoun House, is 29’ x 20’ with concrete and brick walls that are painted white, and an unpainted concrete floor.  There is one doorway (45” x 81”). The ceiling has exposed pipes and ductwork; the ductwork is 74” from the floor, the fluorescent lights are 84” from the floor.  The basement also houses artist studios, a classroom, and storage spaces.  Exhibitions will run for approximately six weeks, beginning in July 2008. The artist will be entirely responsible for the installation and removal of their artwork, as well as solely bearing the financial responsibility of any and all supplies and travel expenses, although the LAL will provide a small honorarium.  We encourage KY artists and those from surrounding states to apply.

To apply for the Project Space, please send a cover letter addressing the content of your work and the installation that you propose for the Project Space, 10 images of artwork along with an inventory list of the images (we will accept slides or digital images), an artist statement, and a resume listing other gallery exhibitions.  If the artwork that you would like to exhibit in the Project Space is currently unrealized, include a detailed, written proposal, with drawings or other images if possible.  Slides or CDs will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.  Artists who are accepted for exhibition in the Project Space will not have their slides or CDs returned until the close of their exhibition.  Slides and application materials are due by May 9, 2008.  Notifications will be mailed by June 6, 2008.

LAL membership

  1. LAL members may submit up to three images for consideration, due June 6 to the LAL, but selection committee reserves the right to select only one for exhibit

  3. Statement, addressing how artwork fits a social, political, or personal theme related to the election due June 30 or July 1 – must be e-mailed to Visual Art Director

KY.7 Biennial
Entry Deadline: July 3, 2008

October 18 - December 21, 2008

The KY7 Biennial is the beginning in a series of exhibitions, presented by the Lexington Art League, showcasing new work by living artists in Kentucky and any of its contiguous states including Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, celebrating the richness and variety of the visual arts in our region. All artists who have spent time during the last three years working in any of the above states are invited to submit images of their work, in any medium, along with an exhibition statement and resume for consideration by the selection committee. While all media will be considered, the exhibition will place special emphasis on contemporary art that uses new media or installation work.

Eligibility and Media

All artists, age 18 and older, having lived and worked in Kentucky or its contiguous states within the last three years, are eligible to enter the KY7 Biennial. All media and styles will be considered.

Entry Fee and Procedure

There is no entry fee for this exhibition.  July 3rd is the deadline to receive all entries. Please note the LAL cannot be held responsible for postal delays. Send all entry information to: KY7 Biennial, Lexington Art League, 209 Castlewood Drive, Lexington, KY 40505. Review will be by slide or digital images, although we prefer to receive digital images.

To submit an application please send:

  • Up to 10 digital images
  • Image list with title, media, dimensions, and date for each work
  • Resume
  • Artist statement (optional)

    • For video artists, please submit one (1) DVD with a maximum of four (4) submissions, totaling no more than 10 minutes. Do not send videotapes.

    • For performance or installation pieces, artists should submit a one-page description along with a video or CD of audio or video content, if applicable.

    Applications will be reviewed as they are received.

    Final notification letters will be sent the week of August 22.

Call for Instructors

›Collage Workshop Series


The Lexington Art League seeks a qualified art instructor for a 1-day, 6-hour collage workshop. This workshop will focus on creating original collage pieces using found objects and magazine clippings, in the vein of expressionism. Works displayed in the Response to Fear exhibit must be incorporated into the curriculum in some fashion. The Instructor will be responsible for creating a syllabus for the workshop, and will work directly with the Program Coordinator to set the workshop’s date, time and curriculum. The workshop will take place at the Loudoun House, 209 Castlewood Drive, Lexington. Qualified candidates will possess previous teaching experience and a strong exhibition history, particularly in the collage genre.

›“Scaling Wall-to-Wall” Workshop Series

The Lexington Art League seeks a qualified art instructor to teach a scale-drawing workshop series. This workshop series centers on the art of taking small works of art and scaling them up to impressively large sizes. Works in LAL’s Wall-to-Wall exhibit will be viewed and considered in discussion and creation of projects. Qualified instructors must possess a strong exhibit history, previous teaching experience and two professional references.

Please send a cover letter, resume and at least three digital images of large-scale and/or scaled work to jcuriel@lexingtonartleague.org. The deadline for application is April 1, 2008, 5 PM.

›Portraiture Workshop Series

The Lexington Art League seeks a qualified art instructor to teach a mixed-media portraiture workshop series. This workshop will focus on creating portraits from live models, and will explore themes of national heritage and identification. Exciting and controversial discussions encouraged. Works in LAL’s Election exhibit will be viewed and considered in discussion and creation of portraits. Qualified applicants must possess exhibit history in portraiture, previous art teaching experience and two professional references.

Please send a cover letter, resume, references and at least three digital images of portraiture work to jcuriel@lexingtonartleague.org. The deadline for application is May 15, 2008, 5 PM.

›Political Cartooning Workshop Series

The Lexington Art League seeks a qualified art instructor to teach a political cartooning workshop series. This workshop will focus on political cartooning, incorporating work from LAL’s Election exhibit to use as inspiration and/or guidelines in the creation of cartooning works. Qualified applicants must possess related work in a cartooning field, previous art teaching experience, and at least two professional references.

Please a send cover letter, resume, references and at least three digital images of cartooning/caricature work to jcuriel@lexingtonartleague.org. The deadline for application is May 15, 2008, 5 PM.
