Born and raised in Michigan, Carol Shutt is a Kentucky artist who specializes in photography. Shutt attended Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, Michigan, receiving a diploma in nursing, and was an RN for many years. Later she went back to school to receive a BS in general university studies with a focus on health and human services, and then pursued an MSW in social work from Western Michigan University.
Due to the emotional challenge of working in Health Care, Shutt took up photography as a way to escape from the stress. At first her photography contained no trace of people, but has changed over the years, where her work now shows a variety of subjects. While currently learning more about being a street photographer, some of Shutt’s other subjects and themes found in her photography are of nature scenes, images of abandoned things, history, and cultural and traditional activities. Carol now uses digital cameras to take her photos. On occasion Shutt will incorporate into her photography other forms of artwork such as making her own paper (sometimes containing tobacco or corn silk), to create a unique image as well as matting the photos, and creating decals of her photos. Considering herself a “Shoot and run” photographer, often times she will have little planning and rely on luck to capture the image, but when it comes to certain projects and series, Shutt will require planning, research, interviewing and flexibility, such as her tobacco series which look at the history and culture of tobacco farmers, and her funeral series which captures the different funerary traditions and practices.
