Common Good

Since the summer of 2012, LAL has partnered with Common Good to provide art classes to school-aged children living in the Castlewood, North Limestone, and East End neighborhoods of Lexington.  Through a wide variety of media, both traditional and experimental, students explore contemporary art concepts presented by artists in LAL exhibitions.

Common Good exists to advance holistic community development in North Lexington through leadership development, education, recreation and spiritual formation.  Common Good Community Development Corporation was born out of grassroots service among youth and families in the North Lexington area. After five years of working with youth from the Castlewood, N. Limestone, and East End neighborhoods, John and Laura Gallaher launched Common Good’s after-school program in January of 2012. It serves kindergarten-12th grades and is open from 2:30-6:00pm Monday-Thursday during the school year.

Castlewood Community Center
Summer Fun Camps

Through a partnership between the Castlewood Community Center and the Lexington Art League, children participating in the Castlewood Community Center Summer Camps receive a non-traditional visual arts education from instructors hired by LAL.

The instructors lead the children to complete a myriad of different art projects based on experimentation with media, ideas and methods, and encourage the children to creatively explore alternatives to traditional art-making.

The result for the 2008 partnership was an installation entitled “C-City,” in which each child built at least one structure to be included in their collaborative city made of found objects, paint, and other various media. In 2009, students created stepping stones to be integrated into the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden.
