Pairs
Kim Comstock
A formal portrait, even in its most traditional form, makes a strong statement about the permanency and importance of a relationship. These double portraits depict life long pairs: couples, siblings, best friends, and business partners. They are meant to feel like heirloom paintings, records of a lifelong bond.
Double portraits are particularly challenging to compose. Some of my paintings are meant to be naturalistic, and others have intentional compositional tension. I tend to use vibrant colors and patterns, and dramatic, classical lighting. I enjoy the technicalities of realist painting. The entire aim is to manage to keep a painterly immediacy while maintaining accuracy and likeness.
About the Artist: Kim Comstock is a decorative artist and portrait painter now living in Winchester, Kentucky. She has been a full time professional artist for nearly thirty years, following her education at Transylvania University and the New York Academy of Art. When in New York, she took a job making hand painted wallpaper, which sparked her interest in the decorative arts. She moved back to Lexington in 1999 and began doing faux finishes and murals. Over the years she has built a reputation working for upmarket interior designers both locally and internationally. She has done projects at many notable Lexington horse farms, and her decorative work has been featured in publications such as Southern Living, House and Garden, and Garden and Gun. She has renovated over 45 historic houses and is well acquainted with the construction industry, but her real interest has always been in fine art portrait painting. She has furthered her artistic education in London, Paris, and Rome, and recently has begun taking portrait commissions.
