Master Class is a quality visual art education program, offered free of cost only to high school students who are gifted in visual art and who are interested in pursuing a career in visual art or a related field. All supplies and materials will be provided and there is no registration fee. Participation is granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Master Class with Colleen Toutant Merrill (Spring 2013)
"Social Artworking"
Saturdays, 1-4pm, May 4 - June 8, 2013
May 4 @ UK, All other classes meet @ LAL's Loudoun House
Participants will collaborate with artist Colleen Toutant Merrill for a total of 15 hours in a class that examines social networking including, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites. Participants will visit Merrill’s art studio at the University of Kentucky to gain an understanding of the creative process in an art making environment. The School of Art and Visual Studies art studio classrooms will also be visited during the field trip.
At the Lexington Art Leagues’ classroom, participants will construct sculptural forms with found materials such as fabric, paper and other functional objects. Students will be encouraged to use both found and art materials of personal interest to embrace their creative art process. The sculptures will be inspired by the students’ experiences with social media as well make students aware of art as a resource for communicating with others. Knowledge of talking about art will be developed through activities that engage social media and through informal artist critiques.
About the Instructor: Merrill is a professional artist and educator living in Lexington, Ky., with training in fiber and sculptural art. She earned her BFA at University of Cincinnati and her MFA from the University of Kentucky and has exhibited extensively throughout the region since 2006. Merrill has facilitated several community art projects including the Florence Crittenton Home for Women Community Art Quilt and the Lyric Theatre African American Community Art Quilt. She was recognized with an honorable mention in Sculpture Magazine's 2012 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Awards. Learn more about Merrill at her website.

“Printing with Purpose; the Art of Selling Art”
Saturdays, October 20, 27 and November 10, 17 from 1pm to 4pm
In this class Kentucky high school students will produce art to sell at the LAL Black Friday. The goal of the class is to teach them about selling art – how to develop ideas and ways of working that help make their art more profitable. We will discuss price points, marketing, and how to get involved in an art community. We will also learn by doing! Students will design different items to sell using one color relief printing techniques. They will market their work as well as sell it at the event and donate the proceeds to an agreed upon charity.
Elizabeth Foley is a working artist living in Lexington, Kentucky. She earned her BFA in graphic design from Washington University and her MFA in Printmaking from Ohio University. She has been making and selling prints nationally for over 15 years. Her wok is included in collections at Bank One, Federated Department Stores, UK Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. Her work is abstract addressing formal issues of color, pattern, and shape. Her latest work incorporates circles that represent relationships and balance or balance in relationships. Master Class with Rae Goodwin (Spring, 2012)
Participants will study under artist Rae Goodwin to create interactive art pieces addressing environmental issues out of recycled materials. Students will research waste reduction as it relates to the community, as well as ways other artists have addressed similar environmental issues in art.
The work will culminate in a parade along the Legacy Trail to be captured on video and/or photographs and posted for online viewing. Through the process of transforming recycled materials into art with a social message, the students will deepen their understanding of the subject while raising awareness of environmental justice; and, most importantly, each student will enhance his/her skill set and knowledge base with respect to performance art and art on parade. |
Master Class with Lennon Michalski (Fall, 2012)
“Beasties into Beauties”
Saturdays, September 1 – September 29 from 1pm to 4pm Kentucky high school students will study the basic elements of realism and surrealism with Lennon Michalski for a total of 15 hours. Students will view a demonstration by Michalski, draw and paint realistic figures, faces, landscapes and spaces in grayscale and in color using projected imagery as a guide, and finish pieces by drawing and painting the surrealist metamorphosis of natural images to imaginary forms on canvas or paper. Lennon Michalski, a thirty-year-old painter and digital video artist from Kentucky, has shown work internationally in Mexico, Columbia, and China. Since graduating from University of Colorado at Boulder with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Digital Media, Michalski has been creating artwork with imagery that conveys atmospheres full of danger, beauty, and comedy, with strange machines, surreal animals, and abstract figures. Recently named one of the “Top 100 Southern Artists” by Oxford American, he now teaches in the College of Art at University of Kentucky. Master Class with Nick Alley (Fall, 2011)

Throughout the program, students will be exposed to a variety of prints and printmaking techniques through quick presentations and examples of printed art. Participants will learn and execute various relief printmaking techniques and printing processes. The program will conclude on the final day with students printing not only on paper provided by LAL, but on any t-shirts they bring as well. All supplies are provided (except t-shirts for “Print-Your-Own-Shirt” Day).

Students will study for 16 hours under professional artist and educator, Charlie Campbell, to produce a digital and mixed media installation for long-term display at the Loudoun House. Students will also acquire basic computer imaging techniques and learn how to apply them to art-making. The workshop is free of cost and open only to high school students who will not otherwise have the opportunity to study visual art with a professional artist. All supplies are provided.

Master Class with Stacey Chinn (Fall, 2010)
LAL partnered with Raven Run Nature Sanctuary to offer the 4th installment of Master Class led by Stacey Chinn, professional visual artist and educator.
This intensive, creative educational experience culminates in a final group sculpture inspired by eco-systems unique to Raven Run. The class project will be installed along the main walkway leading to the new Nature Center. This program is funded by an Ecoart Grant awarded by LFUCG. |

The Lexington Art League (LAL) is offering a Master Class for high school students this November.
The 3-day program will offer participants the opportunity to study under Waseem Touma, a professional artist known for his sculptures, drawings and, most currently, his commissioned mural on Vine Street as part of LexArts’ Downtown Mural Project. Mr. Touma will engage students in visiting his studio, as well as in discussion and various exercises surrounding LAL’s exhibition, KY7 Biennial; in addition, he will lead them in the completion of their final project: a mural in the basement of the Loudoun House, the flagship gallery for LAL. Students will enhance their understanding of what it takes to live as a professional artist, therefore finishing the class better equipped to navigate the course of their own career.
There is no cost for this workshop and all supplies are provided.
