Unscripted Expressions
Matt Lingerfelt
Matt Lingerfelt primarily creates abstract art with elements of science fiction and fantasy. His work invites viewers to use their imagination to interpret each piece, embracing themes of the surreal aspects of life. The goal is to evoke a range of emotions and thoughts, allowing each person to find their own message within the art. The ambiguity is intentional, as Matt believes art should be a personal journey for every viewer. His inspiration comes from a diverse array of sources: music, movie posters, films, TV shows, everyday life, nature, and the human form. Influences include artists like Roger Kastel, Drew Struzan, and Jon Alvin, as well as iconic movies such as Star Wars and Blade Runner. Additionally, the works of Edward Hopper and HR Giger, though not directly visible in his art, profoundly shape his creative outlook.
Matt uses various materials, including acrylic paint, watercolor, ink, alcohol pens, and gouache on canvas and watercolor paper. These mediums provide the flexibility and expressiveness he seeks. His creative process is intuitive and spontaneous, often starting with a color or pen and evolving as he works. He continues until he is satisfied with the result. The goal of his art is to create something that brings joy to himself and others. "I want to make art that really connects with people, making them feel something, see things differently, or remember personal moments." He leaves the interpretation open, trusting that each viewer will derive their own meaning and connection to the work.
"My art reflects what I think and feel at the time it’s made. But I leave it up to everyone to figure out what they see in it too." Each piece is a testament to what Matt finds intriguing and enjoyable, infused with the emotional and experiential nuances of daily life. The work is meant to spark imagination and evoke a sense of wonder and introspection. "Basically, it’s up to everyone to figure out what they see."
