Matters of the Heart

Tony Wavy

They say home is where the heart is. Welcome to my humble abode. As an artist, I have often found myself entangled in the pursuit of creating masterpieces that conform to specific niches or cater to particular audiences, whether for commercial success or recognition. This endeavor sometimes leads to producing works that do not resonate with my true self. Reflecting on my upbringing, I recall a time devoid of constraints—just me and the freedom to create whatever my heart desired. I believe that this unbridled creativity represents the purest form of artistic expression, where creation stems from the heart, unburdened by the mind’s overthinking. The heart accomplishes what the mind cannot fathom.

The heart symbol universally represents love, affection, and care. As a believer in God, I perceive the heart as the core of human existence, encompassing the mind, soul, and spirit. It serves as the wellspring of a person’s emotions, thoughts, and actions. In Luke 6:45, it is stated, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” This prompts me to be introspective: What is my heart producing? What manifests from me artistically? Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” This scripture teaches me that my art cannot be based on anyone else’s heart but my own. I can only create works that are authentic to me and my life experiences.

Wherever my heart resides, that is what will emerge from me, regardless of the medium. We must not limit our feelings or creative expressions, nor do we need to measure up to anyone else’s heart but our own. I choose to create based on my life experiences and daily inspirations, whether that be on canvas, through instrumental compositions, or in garment design. I let my heart speak for itself.
