Intersection: White Coats

Deadline Extended to December 13th!!!

What is this project?

An icon of the health profession is the crisp, white coat of a physician. Our care teams commit their lives to the study of medicine. They diagnose our illnesses, prescribe medications or treatments, and treat our symptoms. They offer counsel so that we may better understand the health of our loved ones and ourselves. Using a blank, white coat, artists of all abilities and backgrounds are invited to submit designs that explore the humanity in healthcare and, if juried into the exhibit, will receive a coat to use as a canvas to create their proposed artwork. The coats are a 65% polyester/ 35% cotton blend.

How it Works

Send in a concept drawing of your idea of how you would transform a lab coat into a work of art that explores the idea of humanity in healthcare. We have provided a PDF (linked above) that has all of the details as well as a drawing of the type of lab coats that will be used. You can download the PDF to fill in your idea digitally, or you can print the page and work directly on the paper, or just use it for reference. Finished concept drawings can be scanned to your computer or you can take pictures of it to email back to us. The concept design page must be sent back as a .pdf, .doc, or .jpg.

Each entry may include two different design ideas. The physician’s lab coats may be transformed using any medium(s) of choice, including but not limited to paint, dye, ink, fabric, found objects, or other embellishment. The coat must remain intact such that the silhouette remains identifiable as a lab coat.

Please include the following with each concept drawing:
  • Name
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • Title/Inspiration or a brief explanation of your design
  • Medium(s) that you plan to use

Email your concept drawings and information to:  lalexhibitions@gmail.com

Finalists will be selected by a jury of CREATE and Lexington Art League staff. Once the finalists have been selected they will be notified by email and will be given additional project details. Lab coats will be made available for pick-up or can be mailed to the finalist.

All finalists are responsible for transporting/shipping of the finished artworks to the Lexington Art League. All finished artworks must arrive no later than March 16, 2021. All finished artwork will be auctioned during the exhibition in support of CREATE and the Lexington Art League, with artists receiving 50% of the sale price of their piece.

Additional Details

Accepted works will be displayed as part of the larger INTERSECTION exhibit which will include additional works of art, informational panels and text that highlight aspects of the fields of arts in health and creative arts therapies (music therapy, art therapy, etc.), as well as other health and wellness modalities.

The exhibition will be on display at the Lexington Art League
from: March 19, 2021 to April 23, 2021
