Through a partnership between LFUCG Parks & Recreation, Castlewood Community Center and the Lexington Art League, children ages 5-12 years old, participating in Castlewood’s Community Center Summer Fun Camp, receive a non-traditional visual arts education. In effort to build lasting partnerships and art enrichment within our neighborhood, we provide this free daily art class annually over an eight week period.
Students are exposed to media, ideas, and methods of contemporary art practices. Each week instructors lead the children through dynamic art activities including tours of LAL exhibitions, enriching discussions of visual art and hands on art-making.
Since 2012, Lexington Art League has partnered with Common Good to provide a variety of art classes to school-aged children living in the Castlewood, North Limestone and East End neighborhoods of Lexington. Students explore experimental and non-traditional contemporary art practices in collaboration with local and regional artist instructors.
Lexington Art League looks forward to continuing and providing free and dynamic art programs to community neighborhood groups like Common Good.
Common Good exists to advance holistic community development in North Lexington through leadership development, education, recreation and spiritual formation. Common Good Community Development Corporation was born out of grassroots service among youth and families in the North Lexington area. After five years of working with youth from the Castlewood, N. Limestone, and East End neighborhoods, John and Laura Gallaher launched Common Good’s after-school program in January of 2012. It serves kindergarten-12th grades and is open from 2:30-6:00pm Monday-Thursday during the school year.
