Dana Rogers: Phosphenes
Artist Statement
- Phosphenes. Light and color that is seen when the eyes are closed. Pressure applied on or near closed eyes can affect what is seen.
- Lens. An optical element which converges or diverges light (and color).
- Through the lens. An idiom about changing one’s perspective.
I use meditation to help combat anxiety and to build focus. In my personal practice, I interpret movement of light and color to visualize and intuitively read internal messages in meditation, similar to dream analysis. Using symbolism and intuition to reflect on these visuals, I interpret underlying thoughts. I use visualization to slow my breathing and to calm overstimulated sensations within my mind and body.
Taking the same approach when viewing two-dimensional images opens my mind and allows for further insight into my own emotions.
As you walk through this space, visit each piece with a few deep breaths.
- Feel your body release as gravity helps you to sink into the ground, as if you are growing roots into the earth.
- Release your hands down by your side; your shoulders away from your ears.
- Close your eyes and notice the phosphenes.
- Alternate breathing with your eyes open and closed.
- Visualize and transform the two-dimensional space in front of you into a three-dimensional space in your mind.
- Notice any sensations or emotion.
- Pair each two-dimensional image with your own phosphenes.
