Dreamscapes
Kevin Nance
Artist statement: In this, my most surreal and experimental series of photographs, shot over the past decade, I explore the spaces between reality and dreams. Using long exposures, reflections, and various forms of distortion (caused by movement, weather, and other phenomena), the pictures conjure alternate dimensions that exist just outside our normal ways of seeing. These are the worlds we glimpse in peripheral vision, at the far edges of consciousness, and on the way in and out of sleep. They often have a ghostly, uncanny quality that comes close to the way I remember my dreams, which is to say indistinctly and yet with an emotional charge that rarely occurs in my “real” life. What do they mean? My titles suggest possibilities, but in the end it’s up to you.
