Dreamscapes
Kevin Nance

Artist statement: In this, my most surreal and experimental series of photographs, shot over the past decade, I explore the spaces between reality and dreams. Using long exposures, reflections, and various forms of distortion (caused by movement, weather, and other phenomena), the pictures conjure alternate dimensions that exist just outside our normal ways of seeing. These are the worlds we glimpse in peripheral vision, at the far edges of consciousness, and on the way in and out of sleep. They often have a ghostly, uncanny quality that comes close to the way I remember my dreams, which is to say indistinctly and yet with an emotional charge that rarely occurs in my “real” life. What do they mean? My titles suggest possibilities, but in the end it’s up to you.

Artist Bio: Kevin Nance is a writer and photographer in Lexington. His photographs have been exhibited in more than a half-dozen galleries in Chicago (including a solo show at AdventureLand Works on Paper), Portland, Ore., and Danville. In Lexington, his prints have been seen in solo exhibits at the University of Kentucky Hospital Chapel Gallery, the Lexington Public Library and the Arts Connect Mobile Gallery, and in group shows at the Lexington Art League. Kevin is the author of two collections of photographs and haiku, Even If (UK Arts in HealthCare, 2020) and Midnight (Act of Power Press, 2022), copies of which are available in the Art League Gift Shop. His pictures are part of more than 300 private art collections around the United States and have been published in the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, Poets & Writers Magazine and many other publications.
