Curatorial Statement
The Nude exhibition has a 30-year history with the Lexington Art League but when it was launched in the 1980’s it was presented with nervous anticipation. The president of the organization, Elsie Harris, was simply relieved the exhibition wasn’t shut down by the authorities for lewdness or indecent exposure. The exhibition, filled with nude subjects, was instead embraced and grew to become a staple of Lexington’s annual art calendar.
The Kentucky Nude is now presented as a biennial and the finale for the 2019 exhibition calendar. Two long-standing Loudoun House studio artists, Don Ament and Helene Steene served as this year’s jurors. Both bring unique and informed perspectives to the selection process, having studied the human form through their respective creative practices and having participated as artists in previous years of The Nude.
Selected artworks present a range of bare human forms within a variety of mediums, styles, and subjects. Some exhibit classical treatments of the figure while others present more loosely rendered depictions or experimental approaches. Some offer great levity while others offer immense gravity. All present in-depth explorations and unique lenses on the raw human form.
“This exhibition showcases artistic talent ranging from student work of merit, all the way to outstanding pieces by masters in complete control of their artistic voice and medium - all from right here in Kentucky.” - Don Ament
“We invite you to spend some time with the artworks that speak to you directly, and maybe to discover new interpretations of how some Kentucky artists celebrate the human form.” - Helene Steene
