Overlay/Connection
Marta Dorton
January 29 - March 12, 2021
Artist Statement:
Connection is an exchange or intake of energy. Humans are naturally attracted to energy sources - light and heat play powerful roles in our lives. Human connection is about the energy of the relationship – the wiry excitement when two people find common ground. When I submitted the proposal for the OVERLAY/CONNECTION art exhibit in January 2019, I did not foresee the challenges we continue to live through as the exhibit opens January 2021. Trying times indeed – a year of human connection limited due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
"I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship." -- Brené Brown
Connections remain even if we do not see them, are not looking or unable to notice. These ties are deep-rooted in time, body and space. Through connection we have the ability to grow a personal exchange with another human and benefit from that relationship. The nature of life is connection -- depending upon one another and assisting others to maintain life.
"The whole world is inside each person, each being, each object. To know any part of the world deeply, intimately, is to know the whole world. Each of us, then, must find our own particular domain – that little corner of the world in which we can drill for gold. For the acupuncturist it is knowing the body through the language of Chinese medicine. For the painter, it is knowing the world through paint and the canvas. For the writer, it is knowing the world through words." -- Stephen Cope
The OVERLAY/CONNECTION project provides an outlet to explore connection and ponder the possibilities ahead.
