Global Village
Nancy E. Walker
Artist Statement:
The arch of an eyebrow A missing front tooth A lifetime of worry Etched into leathery skin Each face tells a tale There is beauty in every one: Dark-skinned and fair Abled and challenged Cherubic and gnarled Glitterati and literati Lives as varied as my media ~ Soft as graphite Vibrant as colored pencil Sharp as pen and ink Fickle as watercolor This is our Global Village ~ 195 countries in all More when borders shift again As they always do Casting lives into chaos |
Artist Bio: Art has been my lifelong interest. I began my own creative endeavors when I retired after 30 years as a professor and researcher of developmental psychology. I am primarily a self-taught artist, although I have been privileged to take workshops with watercolorists Mary Whyte, Janet Rogers, and Mike Hyrman.
My goal as an artist is to create works that touch the heart of the person who views them. I select media and colors for their ability to portray a particular mood. Do I want to depict joy? Tragedy? Whimsy? Tranquility? Chaos?
My primary art project, Global Village, depicts one person from each of the 195 populated countries on Earth. To date, I have completed 147 of those portraits. In them, I strive to show the great variations in race, ethnicity, social class, and life circumstances of the billions of people who live in our global community—all of us are different, yet all of us are connected by our humanity.
My artwork is displayed in private collections in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
