American Excess
Stephanie Roberts
Artist Statement: There is a serene quality to soft, simple color palettes and design but I have always been drawn to creating with a reckless abandon in the form of color and composition. As an artist, I have a fundamental lack of moderation, the very definition of excess itself. My exhibition, American Excess, pokes fun in the overindulgence often seen in consumerism and consumption in our own country, while glossing over the hard truths in vibrant color combinations, gilded elements and often, a small pinch of sparkle. I often display a heightened focus on medicinal exploitation in my work, naturally influenced by my own experience working in healthcare. My art seeks to join the abandon of these extreme lifestyles if only for a moment, a taste of the superfluous without judgment.
Bio: Stephanie Roberts is a mixed media artist specializing in epoxy resin and sculptural acrylic paintings. She has always found a strong attraction to three-dimensional forms of art and enjoys creating depth in her designs within the many layers of resin that compose her pieces as well as building sculptural elements with acrylic gels. She is a lover of bold color and enjoys studying color theory and the relationship between different color combinations and the emotional reactions they evoke.
A native of Appalachia, Stephanie was born and raised in the foothills of Prestonsburg, KY, moving to central Kentucky at 18 years of age to attend Georgetown College. Her passion for creativity began at a young age through visual and performing arts, as well as writing. After receiving her Doctorate of Pharmacology and practicing as a pharmacist for over a decade at the University of Kentucky, she finally committed to her first true love and became a self-taught, full time artist in 2019. Her first career in medicine still heavily influences many of her works today.
Stephanie’s art can be found throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Some of her largest public collections include prominent medical practices in Manhattan, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Miami as well as university hospitals. In the past few years she has collaborated to create art for brands such as Chambord, Puritan Medical Products and the production of “Jagged Little Pill”, the musical, on Broadway.
You can read more about her transition from healthcare into the arts from an interview featured on Business Insider in November of 2020. Stephanie has also been interviewed on podcasts including “Hashtag No Filter” and “Your Financial Pharmacist” that are available publicly. More of her past projects can be found on her website www.artbystephanieeroberts.com and on Instagram, @artbystephanieroberts.
Stephanie resides in Lexington, KY and practices in her home studio. She enjoys the peace of living and working on a small farm in equestrian country with her husband, but also enjoys the noise and chaos of her three small children when the work day is finished.
