Artist Statement: I consider myself an eco-feminist, permaculture practitioner. Kentucky has been my home most of my life and its wildlands play a central role in my art. My work, be it in painting or printmaking, attempts to highlight and honor nature from a non-anthropocentric viewpoint. My position in the habitats I depict is mindful, intentional, and relational. The places I paint I have visited multiple times and feel a connection to. The animals I make into linocuts and cyanotypes are individuals, as important as any human portrait. As an art educator, I try to raise ecological awareness through teaching art workshops in nature settings. Each art piece is my hymn to our common Mother. We are still her wild-born, and I hope my art serves to remind each of us of our kinship.
Gaia’s Sentinels depict sacred or meaningful land stewarded by Kentucky women. This exhibit was funded through a 2022 Kentucky Foundation for Women Artist Enrichment Grant. I wanted to highlight women who steward large tracts of public or private land—be it as a farmer, land manager, scientist, forester or private landowner in Kentucky. I traveled to each location chosen by the steward, and sat with them as they spoke about their experiences on that land. These women were generous with their time and extraordinary in their wisdom. Their intimate knowledge of the land taught me so much and the connection they have with the land feels vital and authentic.
I hope young people see these artworks, read about each sentinel and come away with hope.
I hope each visitor here helps me amplify their voices.
About the Artist: Teresa hails from Louisville and is a painter and printmaker. After earning her MFA from the University of Kentucky in 2002, Teresa has spent her career teaching art to all ages, but primarily at the high school and college levels. She left institutional education in 2021 to open her own art studio, Spettrahouse, where she conducts classes and has a robust studio art practice. She also teaches throughout Louisville for organizations such as Louisville Visual Art and Preston Arts Center. Teresa actively exhibits in regional and national art fairs. Her work is represented by Grady Goods and Kore Gallery in Louisville.
The original paintings will be gifted to each corresponding steward at the close of this traveling exhibit. If you wish to support the artist and the Lexington Art League, please consider purchasing a print.
