victory  without  fanfare:
Lori  Larusso  &  melissa  vandenberg
sept.5-Oct.5

Darkly playful twists on retro Americana themes are the kinds of subjects you'll find in mixed-media artist Melissa Vandenberg's and painter Lori Larusso's joint exhibition, Victory Without Fanfare. Both artists are interested in political ideology and how those ideas are communicated through symbols, particularly the symbols of everyday domestic life. Featured works also explore themes of nostalgia and sentimentality in a way that questions the mythologies of the idyllic American Dream, patriotic pride and duty, and the way in which we culturally and systematically romanticize a point in history that was no more perfect than our present. This exhibition is also the public debut of new bodies of work the artists created this past summer during In Residence, a three month residency at the Loudoun House.
